CHAPTER EIGHT

THE HOUSE OF FREEDOM

“Arthur, the most handsome of the guardians.”

“Jade.”

The two parties had met again at the precise time and spot Arthur had demanded, if not a little earlier. Micky had quickly straightened his bowler hat upon seeing their new guest and attempted to greet Jade with a sly kiss on the hand, but she had palmed him away swiftly and stepped directly up to the guardian.

“Whatever happened to giving me a call when you got back from the Arctic?” asked Jade, with the same devilish smile.

“I don’t recall making such a promise,” was Arthur’s flaccid response.

“Oh well, maybe it was just wishful thinking on my end,” she said, giving him a wink and turning to the other men, who were watching on in complete awe at this awkward exchange between the woman and Arthur of all people.

“As I told Tarzan and Teen angst here before, I can’t tell you how I used to get customers to the Chaos Theatre. I signed a blood-oath contract and I don’t feel much like having the life drained from my body. I can however tell you how to get there the old fashioned way.”

“What do you want in exchange,” Arthur snapped, obviously quite familiar with Jade’s methods.

“Easy tiger,” she said, shooting him another wink, “I don’t really like decorating details so I’ll make it simple.”

Micky, Carter, Arthur and Henry watched the woman with meticulous attention as she explained to them the situation she had found herself in, and how they would come to play a part.

“As most of you know, I used to be one of the knights of Rumai, in my younger and more respectable days. Well, since I left the order at least ten years ago, they have been sending knights after me to drag me back. It turns out being the knight of a royal house is more of a blood-in blood-out deal. My own friends I used to fight alongside have come looking for me at least every couple of months and time and time again I send them back-stabbing bastards home with a black eye and maybe a busted rib, if I’m having a bad day. The last knight they sent though, well she was something else. She was the best damn swordsman I’ve seen in a long time and she would have had me too, if I hadn’t kept a Rokenstone on me for emergencies. I can’t fight her again, there’s no way she’ll let me get away next time. If they catch me, I will face a deserter’s trial and they will kill me.”

The story had gotten drastically more intense toward the end and none of the men were quite sure what to say, except for Arthur.

“What is it you are asking us to do Jade? We cannot fight an entire house of royal knights.”

“No of course not. But you can come with me and help me meet a compromise with them.”

Arthur turned away, linking his arms behind his back while he pondered the situation, resembling Griffin quite closely for just a moment.
